Don’t Block Our Future: Watch Our Unblocktober 2025 Webinar On Demand
Friday 24th October, 20252025 marks the seventh year of Unblocktober, and also our first-ever webinar, Don’t Block Our Future: What’s Stopping Us From Doing the Right Thing? We’re delighted to say that the event was a huge success!
Hosted by the team from Lanes Group, the organisers of Unblocktober, the event drew more than 40 live attendees who joined to explore why, despite widespread concern about pollution, so many people still struggle to make small but vital changes to how they dispose of waste.
The session marked an exciting new chapter for Unblocktober as the campaign continues to grow, expanding from awareness to action. Catch up with all the highlights from our webinar below!
What we discussed
The webinar focused on the theme of The Kitchen Sink Crisis, unpacking the disconnect between awareness and behaviour when it comes to how we treat our drains and sewers.
Speakers from Lanes - including Unblocktober Campaign Coordinator Jacob Larkin, Head of Marketing Haylie Orton and Head of ESG Nicola Martin - discussed findings from this year’s national survey, which revealed that 92% of people worry about pollution, yet 41% still pour cooking oil down the sink. The discussion explored why this happens - highlighting issues such as confusion over what’s “flushable”, a lack of clear recycling options and limited access to sustainable disposal methods.
The session also touched on the real-world consequences of these habits, including the cost of clearing fatbergs and the environmental damage caused by wet wipes and oils entering the water system. The event concluded with practical advice for how households, schools and businesses can help to be part of the solution to this growing problem.
Insights from our audience
The interactive format made this event especially engaging, with live polls and a Q&A session giving attendees the chance to share their thoughts and experiences.
- Our audience results reflected both awareness and honesty about the challenges we face:
- 93% of participants understood that fat, oil and grease are major contributors to fatbergs.
- 80% recognised that wet wipes are also a leading cause.
- When asked about the biggest barrier to behaviour change, 56% cited the “out of sight, out of mind” attitude as the main reason people keep making the same mistakes.
These insights reaffirmed that people care - but need better tools, clearer guidance and easier ways to make responsible disposal part of everyday life.
